Everything App

MOBILE APP DESIGN

2022

OVERVIEW

The everything app is your personal mobile tool for participating in the new circular economy. It will help you create an inventory of tangible items and eventually expand to securely store all kinds of personal data, created, managed, and owned solely by you. This data can be used across an ecosystem of applications, marketplaces, and services. The project goal was to make it easy for users to upload and manage their personal items. We focused on making sure that uploading things into the app is as simple and straightforward as possible.

TEAM

Marie Dyachenko – Design

The everything project is building the foundation for a new, circular economy, starting with what’s already in front of us: the things we have, the things we want, and the things we throw away. By collecting this data into an easily-queryable source, we can transform the internet and create real, tangible change.

PROCESS

01

Research

We conducted a comprehensive competitor research and a few small surveys to gain understanding about people's behaviour of describing and categorizing their things.

02

Structure

We meticulously crafted Information Architecture of the app to illustrate the sections and their connections, continued by creating low-fidelity wireframes and a clickable prototype that was used for usability testing.

Design

We worked on a few UI concepts to develop a strong visual identity of the app. Alongside with UI design process, we created a design system to maintain overall design consistency and allow for easy scaling of the app.

Handoff

To ensure smooth development process, all final mockups were neatly organized into sections and flows with detailed annotations on interactions.

INSPIRATION

We started by analyzing second-hand marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace, Depop, Mercari, Poshmark, and OLX. However, the most relevant inspiration came from Pinterest, "outfit picker" apps, and notes apps.

DESCRIBE A THING

A short survey was conducted to understand how people describe their items. Participants were given an overview of the flow and asked to describe five items for their inventory. The results showed an even split: half provided detailed descriptions with property-value bullet points, while the other half listed just the item name and color.

DESCRIBE A THING

To accommodate both types of users, we had to find a solution that would encourage any type of behaviour while uploading thing: allowing people to include as little or as much details as they wanted.

UPLOAD A THING

Users can upload one thing and describe it immediately or upload multiple things that fall under the same category and apply the same template to all of them.

TEMPLATES

Thing templates provide a set amount of properties for each item category, helping users describe their things in more detail and therefore helping others easily find things they need on the marketplace.

PROPERTIES

Thing's page layout is completely customizable allowing users to organize it as they want. Among available properties – Title, Text property, Color & Photo for MVP, Location mark & Rating for next versions.

COLLECTIONS

Users can create collections and groups from their things for convenient organization.

PUBLISH THING

Users have the option to publish their things to the Everything Marketplace, where they can either give it away for free or "auction" it, with other users suggesting a price. More options are planned to be added soon, including "for sale", "trade" and "rent".

MARKETPLACE

Published things can be discovered through the explore tab in the app. Users can search for a patricular thing and filter search results by location, category, and properties included in the thing's template.

SEARCH

Users can either browse through a feed of photos or find things close to them on the built-in map.

Really incredible work: super organized and always coming up with great ideas. A pleasure to work with.
